I didn’t expect this book to be so charming, so captivating, and so whimsical. It took a Jane Austen approach to post-war England but written in an epistolary style that I didn’t expect to like, but I did. What I loved most is that at its heart, this book is a love letter to the love of reading. I adored it.

This book was just... pleasant... in the best sort of way. Reading about the brutal realities of the German Occupation and the physical and emotional scars left on the Island was heart-wrenching (lots of ugly tears in parts). But amidst all the tragedy, this story was really very hopeful and sunny. You want to actually be friends with Juliet and belong to the eponymous book club because their way of looking at the world is just so good.

As seen in the New Yorker Advance Word newsletter. What, am I the only one who reads those things?
