Shockingly enough, this is my first Sarah Waters read, though Fingersmith has been on my shelf for awhile. The Paying Guests is a historical fiction lady love story with a side of whodunit though (view spoiler). I had forgotten what an incredibly compelling storyteller Sarah Waters is. This book reminded me within the first few paragraphs.
Her historical fiction is so incredibly vivid. Even months later, I can still picture the fading glory of Frances's house, their attempts to spruce it up and divide it up for boarders. Often the houses and other settings in books are mere background, but in Sarah Waters' deft hands they become real places with lighting and smells and dust particles in the air. And some ...more

I wanted this to be like The Little Stranger-and it was a different book (obviously). Beautifully written, though a little "wordy", in all honestly probably a four star book for the writing.
I did find it moved slowly at times--it picks up the pace much more in the second half. ...more
