I discovered Patricia C. Wrede when I was ten or eleven years old after stumbling upon Dealing with Dragons on the bookstore shelf. Having recently started reading YA fantasy novels (aka having only read Tamora Pierce), Wrede represented a lighter, wittier strand of fantasy that made her books a quickly-devoured delight and I was only sorry not to have more of them. This particular series features a strong female lead named Princess Cimorene (well, leads if one counts Kazul, the female dragon) w

This book is the reason that cherries jubilee will always be deeply connected in my mind with caves, dragons, princesses, and adventure. It's also the reason my Magical Cooking Apron has cherries on it.
This was another of the first fantasy books I ever read; the ones that sucked me in with strong, intelligent, funny, heroines who don't quite fit into the world they were born into.

An 'improper' princess, dragons, and magic - what else could you ask for? An entertaining story and a different take on the idea of princesses (certainly for the period it which it was written). Highly recommend for the elementary set and their parents!

Another favorite, this one from high school. A spunky princess runs away to go live with dragons, coupled with humorous writing that makes excellent fun of fairy-tale cliches. How could it be anything but down my alley?
