This was a fairly good read. It was NOTHING like Room, in either plot or writing style, although it was still written well. The primary difference for me, besides everything about the story itself (this book takes place in 1700s England), was the pace. I tore through Room in about 1-2 days. I read this on an airplane ride from Seattle to Austin. When the drink service started a note on a napkin made its way to me from the row ahead: “Would you like a cocktail?” “Yes,” I replied, “red wine and thank you,” with the pen provided. And that was that, no other contact for the rest of the trip. Back to the book: does patriarchy set up gender relations as systematized prostitution?
