I was under the mistaken impression that this was historical fiction, taking place during the 1880s when Jack the Ripper did his damage. It then colored my reading somewhat to find it was actually modern paranormal fiction. Huh. Shift gears.
I liked the book, and thought that most of the people and places were well described and developed. One exception for me was the main character's roommate Jazza, who lost a dimension after the girls receive a third roommate. She just got flatter and flatter, ...more

A boarding school story, a culture shock story, a Jack the Ripper story and a discovering paranormal powers story. A lot for one book, but this makes it work. Some of the plot lines fall away and I'll be interested to see if they're picked up in the next book. Rory is a well balanced character, quirky Louisiana roots, brains and bravery and a dash of stupidity.

Ohhhh, I'm a sucker for a Jack the Ripper story! Less Veronica Mars than I'd expected (though maybe the girl sleuth thing develops over the series). Regardless, I enjoy the whole (view spoiler) bit as well as mysteries and thrillers set in schools. Woohoo! I've already picked up The Madness Underneath (Shades of London #2) from the library.

Maureen Johnson always writes great books and this one is no exception. It wasn't quite as creepy as I was promised, until the end which I was reading in the the middle of the night. Looking forward to the next installment with Rory.

This was such a good read! Most of the way through, it dawned on me that I was reading a ghost story, but that's totally not how it started. The narrator's voice and intelligent teenage humor were genuine, and I was drawn in. Loved the details of history, of the Underground, of London's Whitechapel area, of the different characters the MC encounters... great stuff!

I honestly have no idea how to rate or describe this book. It's fun, it is just hard to categorize.
