This is probably the best series Tamora Pierce has written, in large part because it spends time developing characters (but deals with terrain with which readers of her previous Tortall stories are familiar with), but also because we learn of an entirely new world. It's not just some exotic flash back, there is a concerted effort to explain and contextualize the individuals who are there. I listened to Trini Alvarado read this book and enjoyed it. She's an excellent reader, but I really prefer to read books myself. I think it might have been docked a star for that reason. I'm starting the sequel, Trickster's Queen this week, but this time in treeware, so I'll be interested in whether I like it better or not.

Every time I read a Tamora Pierce book it makes me happy! This was a fun adventure story with great characters. The reader got the voice of Aly just right. Aly, the heroine, is clever & brave with a nice touch of sarcasm. Her supporting cast was smart & interesting. The main storyline is predictable, but the little twists & turns aren't. The point isn't where it's going, but how it gets there.

Maybe if I hadn't read shirt stories set in these characters' futures, I might've felt more tension. still a good read.
