This was a very, very satisfying read.
Whether facing skeptical teachers or fighting bullies, Kel proves herself to be capable, smart and caring. This is a really great series from a terrific storyteller!
I was really worried that Tamora Pierce would just be rehashing the "Alanna" story by covering the ascension of the first woman to compete for her knighthood since the realm decides to desgregate (by gender) the ranks. I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was Kel a compelling character who stood on her own, we had a new perspective on what seemed like it would be old territory.
