I'm not quite sure how to describe my reaction to this book -- I gave it 4 stars not so much because I really liked it as because it won't leave my mind. That's one definition of good fiction, I think.

I didn't think I'd like this book. After seeing Amy Tan's unintelligible TED Talk, I've just sort of avoided her writing, even though I really liked "Joy Luck Club." My loss.
In many ways, "Valley of Amazement" isn't a classic or masterpiece. There's little in the way of character development, resulting in a hilarious amount of explication: everyone has to tell the readers about themselves or what's going on at certain junctures because we wouldn't really know otherwise.
