What a remarkable piece of poetry about war and the war that is life. Passion, indeed, is the driving force of this magical novel that explains what it means to be human in the face of the pain and grind of living. I will be thinking about the one for a long time. Plus, Winterson has given us the best descriptions of Venice I have ever read.

I went back and forth between giving this book two and four stars and finally landed on four because I think it achieved what it was trying to do. It was a novel of true obsession and I would argue that passion was never really found.

A far cry from Garcia Marquez (although favorably compared to Marquez on the book jacket), this book was a disappointment. Barely coherent ramblings, a weak attempt at dark magical realism, and a bleak outlook on humanity and people's ability to overcome obstacles. Also a distorted and disturbing look at love. breathtaking. she has a way of being utterly romantic without flowery, over-the-top language. she weaves stories with such command that i'm left with my mouth hanging open by the end.
