Jeanette Winterston's fictionalisation of the Lancaster Witch Trials of 1612 is told here in straightforward uncompromising prose. She joins together witchcraft, religion and politics in a tight plot which delivers equal amounts of intrigue and horror. There is violence and abuse deeply ingrained into the landscape of the novel, the worst of which is performed not by the accused witches but by the men who seek out justice. Dark and twisting, it is a strange but gripping tale.
