Yesterday was my first time participating in 24hourbookclub, reading The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender. I wasn't too familiar with the title choice, but I was thankful for the excuse to read fiction for the day as a break from my thesis reading. Surrounded by piles of theory and ambitious Zotero lists, a deep sense of reading guilt normally prevents me from even entertaining the possibility of cracking the spine (or file, as it were) on a work of fiction, but I've been feeling

"Several of the girls at the party had had sex, something which sounded appealing but only if it could happen with blindfolds in a time warp plus amnesia." That phrase, in a nutshell, epitomizes the best of this book--it captures both the terror and appeal of sex to the uninitiated and sheltered female teen protagonist while managing to be funny, and when Bender is on like this, she's really on. Unfortunately, a lot of the book meanders and feels unfocused. There are fascinating concepts at work

The first of the books I read on the Greyhound ride to Ottawa for a Christmas visit.
I notice many of the other reviews on Goodreads complaining of the difficulties encountered due to the lack of quotation marks. I was sleep deprived, occasionally distracted by a dozing seat-mate whose head kept flopping over onto my shoulder, and yet somehow managed to follow the story without any difficulties, despite the non-standard use of punctuation. I really don't see what the fuss is about.

This was almost the exact opposite of Blindness, which I finished directly before this - while that book was relatively profound but my reading process was excruciating, I found this to be an incredibly light and easy read, that completely fell short of making meaningful points. The concept was really interesting, but I found it to be--to borrow a word from another reviewer--underdeveloped. I'm giving it 3 stars b/c I've found that I tend to care a lot about how I feel about the book WHILE I'm r

If you are looking to take a journey- this is not your book. This book is more like a snapshot of the main character's mind, not a journey alongside her. Personally, I loved this book. I found it deeply moving and rich in its complexity. It's a story about loving those you know the most deep and personal details about and about surviving in the face of those complex truths. I really enjoyed it.

I found this novel horribly depressing. I didn't really enjoy any of the characters but I thought the whole idea behind the novel was a good one. I liked George, but that just added to the overall feeling of depression I got from the entire book. Three stars for creativity though.

In many books nothing unbelievably strange happens, and in others many strange things happen but they are placed within a structure so that it makes internal sense, and in others there is simply unexplained strangeness. This book is the third type, there is no explanation for the ability to taste emotion in food, it just is. It is very hard to make that work, but Aimee Bender does. Rose is a nine year old girl who starts learning way too much about the people around her if she eats food they coo

The premise was intriguing, and the characters were interesting, but the book was just too weird. There aren't any big revelations at the end, so the development ends up seeming too open-ended and mishmashed (Now that's a good lit major word!).
