It blows my mind that Nabokov wrote this novel in something like his fourth language. His writing style is so sophisticated. In Lolita, I thought he told the story in a very direct manner and yet the overall feeling of the book seems aimless. Not easy to do.

The writing in this book is pretty dense, but beautiful and addictive. Sometimes when I think back on this book I think the ending fell kind of flat, and I remember at the time wondering, "is that all?" when it was over. But because the book is so good I always second guess myself and wonder if I just didn't catch everything. Undeniably a classic!

What else can be said about a book like Lolita? This is a deliberately American love story. Sure, it's about a pedophile, but it's not about pedophilia, despite all the waxing poetic about the appeal of the nymphet. Not a single character is likable, yet the reader emphasizes with each -- Humbert's hopeless and inappropriate love for Lolita, Dolores's brattiness and ability to manipulate her "captor," even Charlotte Haze's desperation.
