How often do books feature very good poetry written by the main character? Not often, and not this good. It was reminiscent of Emily Dickinson, her inspiration. It was mostly a quiet book where we watch Emily Beam struggle through her issues, that are revealed to us little by little throughout the first quarter of the book in an expert manner. My biggest complaint is that the poetry just comes to her and it made me both jealous and annoyed that writing here is portrayed as a gift and talent, not ...more

I was underwhelmed, for a Printz winner. I found the meta-analysis of the poetry of both Emilies to be a little much. A good read, but I read better from 2014.
