Just reread for the third or fourth time and I have to bump up the rating on this book because it is still SO GRIPPING. I think as a teenager I thought it was the plot that pulled me in but really very little happens. Instead it's all about the writing, which is masterful and completely pulls you into the narrator's emotional reality -- an intense, terrifying, and constantly changing place. I also did not appreciate when I was a child just how much of this book is about perception versus reality

In high school I took an English class that was all mysteries, and I know we watched the movie adaptation of this book and I thought we read it. While I remembered many things (the first line for one "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.") I had forgotten how bizarre the book truly is. Or maybe as a teen girl I found it much more romantic. The writing is beautiful, but the plot is a bit twisted. I really enjoyed this book. It's beautifully written and suspenseful. And I could relate so well to her portrayal of insecurity felt in the early twenties. At the same time, I was also fighting a deep, deep dislike for Maxim the entire book.
Update: I actually dislike Maxim even more upon further reflection. He was emotionally manipulative and, frankly, not worth the trouble. The strongest emotion I have as a takeaway from reading this is frustration. ...more

To this day, one of my favorite books. It reminds me a bit of Jane Eyre. The plain heroine swept off her feet by the dashing and mysterious hero... "I'm asking you to marry me, you little fool". I love that.
