A five star subject but the telling of the story was not up to that standard. Emma Gatewood first through hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in 1955, taking a taxi to the starting point in Georgia and finishing up in bitter cold in Maine, all in her canvas shoes and with a shoulder pack at the age of 67. I listened to this book and really enjoyed it. Lately I’ve been pulled towards more eco fiction/nature reads and listened to this not so long after I listened to Bill Bryson’s bestselling A Walk in the Woods which is also about hiking the Appalachian Trail. What made this story so interesting is that Emma Gatewood hiked the trail three times beginning when she was 66, a mother of 11, and grandmother besides and I should mention starting in the mid-1950s.
