this would be a really good supplementary text for a math or engineering class
imo the problem with math as it is taught is that nobody seems to think it should be entertaining
which like. WHY? math has been invented/discovered by people? people are hilarious? it is considerably easier to recall ada lovelace's contributions to computing when her biography is affixed to your mind as one of a mathematical superhero raised to fight against the seductive call of poetry???

I'm giving this 4 stars because - yes - I really liked it. However, it was uneven and a bit distracting in its format. I loved all the historical tangents - the "well, this is what really happened" and the "oh, I came across this fascinating historical anecdote in my research; let me share it with you" - but the footnoted footnotes consistently distracted me from the story (the graphic novel / speculative fiction part), and I think the story suffered as a result.
