This book took a hit from my having to take a break in the middle...I couldn't remember any of their names, although I could figure out who was who through context. Also, I didn't like that there weren't any connecting footnotes that I could go to, they were just all at the back. ...more

Fascinating read. It sounds almost like historical fiction, as it attempts to describe the thoughts and feelings of the characters, and strings events together with a lot of flair, while also using their original voices by quoting letters and snippets from their memoirs. This book shows it is possible to thoroughly research a topic, as well as present it in an engaging manner. I wish I had read Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy instead of listening to it as an audiobook. The content and story is likely worthy of four stars, but the quality of the audiobook was distracting. The narration was so robotic and awkward in cadence and word emphasis that I felt as though Siri the GPS navigator were telling me the story. In contrast, all the quotations included in the book were voiced with great accents, fluidity, and believability! I wish it could have all sounded so good.
