My thoughts about this book are complicated: part biography, part history, part memoir, it provides a portrait of Harper and Alice Lee and their deeply southern hometown. It’s weird, though, because it’s also the story of the author, who wants to write about them and gradually becomes friends with them, so there’s a connection between author and subject that I wonder how Mills resolved to herself as a journalist.
