Fran Drescher is not only a great actress but I can honestly tell you having met Fran 3 times, she is a wonderful, amazing, strong, and brave woman too. Uterine cancer survivor of 16 yrs and women's healthcare advocate, Fran shared her story of survival so what happened to her won't happen to others. She was repeatedly misdiagnosed and treated for conditions she did not have because doctors did not order proper diagnostic tests. It took her two years and eight doctors before being told she had gynecological cancer. After Fran's book tour she realized that what happened to her happened to many women as well, so she decided to make it a life mission to improve women's healthcare in America. Hence, Fran created the Cancer Schmancer Movement and the Cancer Schmancer Foundation whose mission it is to "transform women from patients into medical consumers, and shift the nation's priority from searching for a cure for cancer towards prevention and early detection of cancer." There are many lessons learned after reading Fran's story. Be in control of your body, be an advocate for your healthcare, listen to your body, never take no for an answer, and much more. I read Fran's book and met her during her book tour when I was having my own health scare at age 28. Fran was incredibly kind to me. She listened to my story and gave me advice. I'm forever grateful to her. Whether we read this book as a group or not Fran Drescher's Cancer Schmancer is definitely a must read.
