کتاب "دوست باهوش من" داستان زندگی دو دختر باهوش النا و لی‌لا در ایتالیای دهه ۵۰ میلادی است از کودکی تا نوجوانی که داستان زندگی نویسنده کتاب است. اسم نویسنده کتاب اسم واقعی نویسنده نیست و هویت نویسنده هنوز بعد از چند سال ناشناس است.
داستان را از زبان النا می‌خوانیم و از جایی شروع می‌شود که لی‌لا سال‌ها بعد، وقتی هر دو زنان بالغیند، ناپدید شده و النا شروع به گفتن داستان دوستی‌شان می‌کند که دهه‌ها ادامه داشته است با بالا و پایین‌های زیاد.

It's amazing how female friendships can be so intense, all-consuming and even toxic sometimes. There was something clunky about the writing at times, but there was also something classic as well.

This is one of those books that everyone seems to RAVE about and then when you finally get a copy and start reading you think, "this is what the fuss is about?" 🤔 But then by the end of the book the characters do kind of grow on you and I could imagine that I might read the rest of the books eventually. Still I feel there are so many other example of books that do life-long female friendship and rapidly changing post-war Europe better. Am I the only one who wasn't totally blown away by this book
