What Members Thought

This book is phenomenal— thought provoking, beautifully written, and haunting. In many ways it’s the 21st century inheritor of HANDMAID’S TALE but all the more shocking for how like our world it looks. A terrifying and inspiring read for this political moment. I appreciated, too, that all the women in the book are allowed to be complex and ambivalent characters, neither likable nor unlikeable. Just human.

Having heard the premise, I hesitated to read. Too much scary reality right now to need it in fiction. However, the characters she creates kept the story grounded and the ending keeps you hopeful. Lot of comparisons made to The Handmaid's Tale. Though I love Atwood, I really enjoyed this more because it wasn't so defeatist.
