I loved the first half of this book. Poor, abused, rural orphan studies her ass off so she can score the highest on a test that will secure her admittance into the military academy. When she gets there, she learns a lot, faces down the privilege that the children of Warlords have coming into the school, and secures an apprenticeship with a quirky teacher in an esoteric field.
