I see what the author was aiming for, but the execution of the story left a lot to be desired.

Sadly there is no legal precedent for suing an author to get back the money you spent on one of their books. Perhaps taking Lauren Beukes to court could be a test case? Broken Monsters really disappointed me-Beukes use of magical realism did nothing to endear me to this train wreck of a novel. The author tries to infuse this book with some social commentary, which she delivers with the heavy handedness of an eighth grader. Definitely listen to the audiobook. It makes all the difference. I found each character fascinating and the ending nice and suspenseful.
