I really liked this book. This is the third book in the Chicagoland Vampire series and Former grad student Merit - who became a vampire against her will and is now Sentinel (a guardian) for her vampire 'family' - is really coming into her own as a character and as a vamp.

With Twice Bitten, shapeshifters play a large role in the action as Merit pulls a different kind of guard duty. With the vamps facing some negative publicity due to events in the last book, the were-community calls an all clan I really liked this book. This is the third book in the Chicagoland Vampire series and Former grad student Merit - who became a vampire against her will and is now Sentinel (a guardian) for her vampire 'family' - is really coming into her own as a character and as a vamp.

With Twice Bitten, shapeshifters play a large role in the action as Merit pulls a different kind of guard duty. With the vamps facing some negative publicity due to events in the last book, the were-community calls an all clan meeting to decide whether to the chance being caught in the fallout or whether to retreat en masse to the wilds of Alaska and leave the vampires to try and survive on their own - the last time the shifters pulled this stunt vamps lost many friends and loved ones. So in addition to bodyguard duty - because there are some factions wanting to eliminate the leaders to force the exodus - it is up to Merit and her vampire master Ethan to play politics and show that vamps can be good allies in order to provide the incentive to get the wares to stay.

A good part of what made Twice Bitten so good was that Merit is a great leading lady. Her character is a wonderful mix - Merit is smart and yet physical, heroic, loyal and kick butt too. I liked the way that Merit's perceptiveness and her insight, along with the evolution of her fighting abilities, and the challenges of her interactions with Ethan wove through the background plot with the weres and pumped the whole story up a notch.

Without going into spoilerish details, I thought that the emotional aspects of the story were well done too and I found myself sharing Merit's sadness and frustration at times - and I really loved her friend's advice for dealing with Ethan.

I also liked Ethan much better in Twice Bitten than in previous books. He was always sexy, powerful and larger than life but I especially enjoyed the glimpses into Ethan's past which made him more human than the serious leader that he's been in past books and some mistakes on his part in the story give him a vulnerablity which I think upped his leading man potential.

Bottom line is that author Neill is really lining Merit up for an interesting future - with a few complications to spice things up. I can't wait to see how Merit's powers and Merit's relationships with members of Cadogan house continue to evolve. Can't wait to see how the shifter's decision and the fallout from the aftermath events late in the book affect possible alliances and the story arc, and I am really intrigued the by the possibilities of Merit's role with respect to the hints and glimpse of the future which the prescient were-leader Gabe provides.

I liked the Chicagoland series and Merit before, but Twice Bitten has moved this series up to my favorites list - and I am not even a huge vamp fan.

The best so far! Absolutely loved it! Lots of action, romance and the perfect dose of humor! Merit and the gang are back and better than ever in this one, trying to form alliances with their adversaries, shape-shifters, in order to prevent an imminent war.

This was a whirlwind of " who done it" and why. Somebody is trying very hard to kill the head of the shifters and maybe some vamps along with them. The shifters play a huge role in this addition to the series. Will they leave Chicago and hide in the hills or will they stay and fight the foreseen upcoming war ? The tension between them and the vamps, seems never ending. Ethan and Merit struggle to fit together. He is so many years away from his human side and she so new and still so human, there ...more

I loved this book! I love Merit! I love Mallory! I love all the action - even at 97% on my Kindle it was still going, not winding down for the ending at all. I do have a love-hate relationship with Ethan though. I just wish he would make his mind up as to what he wants, but he finally does do that at the end. But I do hate Lacey - who does she think she is calling our fave Sentinel "just a common vampire"?

The series just keeps getting better and better. My emotions where all over the place. Merit and Ethan where incredible...well mostly. I was over joyed then Ethan thru me for a loop and really pissed me off but he did attempt to redeem himself.
The pace was excellent, action and passion where off the charts. I enjoyed the Weres and their introduction in to the series.
I was drawn in from the first page right to the last word.
Highly recommend this book. Look forward to the next installment.
