I wanted to read this, a teen girl killed herself, Pheobe Prince, her death darkened my world a bit, and broke my heart. I have three teens, her death awakened a new fear. This book-Haunting, a look into the events that led a teen girl end her life. She tapes her 13 reasons, the snowball that just rolled along. She sent them to the 13 people that were involved. After finishing up this book last night, I couldn't get to sleep. I just laid in bed and thought about it. What we do everyday, what we say heck what we DON'T do or DON'T say everyday plays some roll in someone's life. You could be one of the names on someones list, you could be the one who could have said just the right thing to stop it. Or you could have been that person to set the snowball rolling. And if you are on someones list, here's hoping your role is Clay.

I felt compelled to write this review after reading all the different perspectives in the reviews section of this book/series.
I was half way through this series/book when I read through some of the reviews in this page and it messed up my head a little on Hannah and why she chose to do what she did.
Now, having finished the book/series, there are a few things I felt compelled to address.
Yes - High school is definitely not a breeze. Everyone goes through a lot during those years and being well in I felt compelled to write this review after reading all the different perspectives in the reviews section of this book/series.
I was half way through this series/book when I read through some of the reviews in this page and it messed up my head a little on Hannah and why she chose to do what she did.
Now, having finished the book/series, there are a few things I felt compelled to address.
Yes - High school is definitely not a breeze. Everyone goes through a lot during those years and being well in the teens does not make it an easy couple of years. Hannah is being butchered in the review section as someone who should NOT have done what she did because she was being bullied/raped/guilty/alone/depressed . The reasoning is that everyone goes through these things during high school. I needed to make something clear - Just because everyone goes through S*** in high school does NOT MAKE IT RIGHT. It's wrong. Bullying is wrong. Rape is a crime. Safeguarding a criminal is a crime. Just because everyone does it and its juvenile DOES NOT make it right.
Halfway through the series/book, I did feel Hannah was seeking drama/attention and that she could have spoken to someone who could help her - maybe even Clay. Maybe even her mum/dad? Instead of bottling up everything that was happening within her that eventually led her to kill herself.
But towards the end - I get her. I understand why she didn't. She could have. But she chose not too. I think people need to understand this from a 17 year old's POV. She had a lot on her plate. And she just could not take it any longer. She is like a volcano that could erupt any second. When she went to Mr.Porter for help, he did try. I cannot deny that. But it wasn't enough. And that is what Clay tries to make people understand. That is WASN'T ENOUGH.
And revengeful as it might be to send out the tapes, I think that it gave a lot of perspective to every kid on those tapes . Bryce does get convicted of his crimes. Jessica who was in denial made peace with what happened to her and Alex and Tyler realize their mistakes. Guilt is a feeling nobody wants to live with. Sheri and Justin got to make amends with what they did wrong. Even Courtney acknowledged her orientation.
Clay was someone who helped Hannah in this process to get these kids to take responsibility for what they had done. Granted, Hannah could have spoken to Clay before. Or, she could have chosen another way, but this was the way she chose and Tony honored that which is why he didn't give the tapes to her parents in the first place. Obviously not the first thing you would have done when you have a bunch of evidence on someone's death with a lawsuit brewing. But death is a difficult phase, more for the people around you. Everyone handles it differently.

Let me make it clear that yes, in some ways this book glorifies suicide. With Jay Asher expressing that only Hannah's death could bring about these changes. But I am not entirely sure if that was what it was made out to be.
Suicide is never an option. Victim blaming should be accounted a crime. Stop victim blaming.. Hannah however revengeful, cannot be victim blamed for what she did. Suicide isn't easy. It is a tough choice. A choice she made. High school should be a safe place for kids to get educated. Not the portrayal of what society has become today. And this exact society was beautifully portrayed in the series/book. ...more

I really enjoyed this book because it gave me a whole new perspective on the way people treat each other. A rumor started the depression of a young girl and it slowly spiraled into a larger issue that causes her to commit suicide. I look back on all of the things that I went through in high school and I can see how it has permanently shaped the person I am today.
