Shelves: audio, horror, thriller

Heart shaped box is a dark fantasy about an aging death metal star who buys a ghost off the internet that turns out to be far more then he bargained for. The most touching thing about this story is the complex love story at the heart of it, between Jude and his current squeeze Georgia and Jude and his dead flame Florida. I’ve never read anything quite like it but the relationships are a bit reminiscent of the stand.

It was pretty clear where this was going to go. The beginning started out nice and creepy. But then I just got bored. Bored to the point that I was cheering for the (view spoiler) ghost. At least he was moving the story along. Bastard. But, I liked the dogs. I kept reading because of them. The ending picked up. Fa la la. Redemption and puppies.

Joe Hill is the son of Stephen and Tabitha King. Ok that is out of the way so we never have to talk about it again. Instead let's not give a whit about genetics and talk about Heart-Shaped Box. This novel was so good I have a difficult time believing it was a first novel. It moves along at a good and sinister clip.
