I’ve read two Neil Gaiman books (okay, wait three- I read his goofy lyrical kid’s picture book about pirate stew) - The Graveyard and this one, and this is clear: He has really interesting takes about grief. There is something strange and stunning with his grief-stricken worlds.

I also think he does a solid job closing story loops. Details you think are random, but are pivotal in moving the plot forward.
