Another fabulous book from Jennifer Estep!!! This series is firmly one of my favourites and I can't recommend it highly enough. Gin Blanco, aka The Spider, is a trained assassin, runs a BBQ joint and is now the head of the Underworld in Ashland, although she doesn't really want the job and isn't really in complete control of it. The other Underworld bosses still send out their goons to kill her and they don't really respect or fear her in the way they did Mab Monroe.

During a meeting with 3 other bosses, Gin notices something odd about one of the waiters on Philip's casino boat, The Delta Queen. Turns out he has planted a small bomb and when Gin chases him and is shot at but not killed, she realises that the bomb might not have been intended for her. After a quick search across the river, she finds a run carved into a tree - a rune she recognises but cannot place. She knows that she should know more about this rune, but just cannot make the memories surface enough to latch on to.

Gin finds out who it is and where those memories finally come from and with a little help from beyond the grave, she knows who the real target was. She offers to help, but is refused. But Gin being Gin tries to help out anyway, even if it doesn't all go to plan.

She also uses her position to get the info she needs and soon the other Underworld players are falling over themselves trying to get in on her good side.

Loved that this main story plot wasn't about someone trying to kill Gin initially this time, although that intention soon changes when Gin reveals a secret from her past. I know she always comes through in the end, but the final fight was very intense and really took everything Gin had. Had the main target of the elemental not been there Gin may not have survived.

Gin was fantastic as always - maybe a little more subdued at the beginning, but still her feisty self. The only thing I missed in this book was Finn's humour. He appeared and made his usual sarcastic jokes, but not as much as I like - I love him!
