Who wouldn't want to turn up the heat on this icy hunk

Caressed by Ice, the 3rd installment set in Nalini Singh's fascinating Psy-Changeling world, is a wonderful mix of steamy tension building romance and actual series building plot. Brenna and Judd, introduced in Slave to Sensation (The Psy-Changelings, Book 1) take center stage. Theirs is no easy hook-up.

Brenna and Judd, introduced in Slave to Sensation (The Psy-Changelings, Book 1) take center stage. Theirs is no easy hook-up.

Judd Lauren a gorgeous cold as ice Psy, is a former assassin rigidly conditioned to be emotionless. Any touch or hint of emotion brings him physical pain. Because of the type of his Psy powers, Judd accepts that he can never break his conditioning, knowing that without the control he would be deadly to those closest to him.

Brenna is a changling wolf, irrevocably altered by the psychic/physical brutalization that almost claimed her life. Her fear that she has been infected by the evil of her kidnapper spikes when she dreams a murder that comes true. Brenna is drawn to the cool warrior, Judd is the only one she trusts, the only one who deals with her logically and the only one who can see what she needs to be healed. As Brenna breaches walls of Judd's conditioning, Judd becomes unwilling to deny the desire he shouldn't feel. It soon becomes clear that to love Brenna as she should be loved, may mean Judd's death as his powers turn against him to reinforce his conditioning. Though he should stay away from Brenna, and deny himself her touch and his growing passion - when her life is threatened, Judd will risk everything to be the one to protect her.

In addition to doing a fine job of developing the relationship between Judd and Brenna, the Singh also continues to flesh out her world and provide more insight into the ongoing political machinations of the Psy council with all their plots and schemes. She uses old characters effectively, giving them more than just walk ons. We get to see Sasha and Lucas from Slave to Sensation (The Psy-Changelings, Book 1), and Faith and Vaughn from Visions of Heat (The Psy-Changeling Series, Book 2) (Berkley Sensation). She better aquaints us with more members of the changeling world, including Hawke the Snow Dancer Alpha, as well as the rest of the Judd's Psy refugee family. She give us glimpse of how their Psy powers are developing now that the are living in a world where emotion is embraced.

Caressed by Ice keeps Nalini Singh firmly on my must buy list. Keep them coming! Next up are a short story in An Enchanted Season which is a prequel with Nate and Tamsyn's story (there is an excerpt on the author's website) and Mine to Possess out next year.

This one was a much better book in this series than the last book. It was still fairly predictable - it's a PNR, it's fairly obvious what's going to happen between the 2 main characters, although why Brenna, the changeling wolf, would ever want to be with someone as cold as Judd is beyond me, but I guess that's the point. He does eventually show emotion and they do find a way to be together, but the path there is not a straight forward as you would expect from the last book.

There is also a bit more of a story to this one. Someone keeps taking pot shots at Brenna and a few other people get hurt in the process. You do eventually find out who he is and why he is trying to kill her, but again Nalini Singh disappointed me with this part of the story. As far as the wolves are concerned it's life for a life and you didn't get to read about the family who took out their revenge or justice as it is seen on the perpetrator. That's why I prefer the blood, guts and gore in a UF book than the soppiness of a PNR. So why am I reading this series, you may ask? Well I had to see what all the fuss was about and now I've spent a fortune on the whole series, I'm going to finish it even if it kills me! :P

I did like the way that Brenna's character developed and the breakdowns she had showed how difficult her torture in the hands of serial killer Enrique was in the first book. I had to admire her strength to fight back, even if the nightmares of it all were draining her of who she used to be. And even though Judd was one of the coldest psys there was, he still had some emotion of sorts before he left the PsyNet - he left for his sister's kids, so he has to have had some feelings.

I liked the idea of the Ghost as well - I want to guess at who it is, but I'm not sure why be I think it's Faith's dad. I could be wrong and there's no clues at all as to who he is, but that's my gut feeling. We do know it's someone who wants to stop Protocol 1, an invention of the Psy to be the general populace under complete control. Will be nice to see how this story pans out in the next book as well.

My only problem so far, other than the predictability of the story, is the fact that all of these changelings and Psys are falling in love with each other. When will the Psy Council do something to stop losing all their Psy (although they had already lost Judd, presumed dead) and what will happen when all the changelings have fallen for he Psy? Who will fall for who then?! :P ...more

Judd Lauren ... Yum ... need I say more?
This series just keeps getting better and better. What I love about it, the characters in previous books are still involved so its like a mini epilogue for them. After reading this one, I am still anxious to get to Hawke's book, Kiss of Snow He just gets more and more intriguing! What a build up for him! ...more
