I am so glad to be done with this one. It was a relief turning that last page. This is the third novel by Dan Simmons I have read , it is my least favorite. I read a bit of the forward of this one, it seems it was a struggle to get it published and he did not appreciate the editing (or attempted editing). For me, it could have lost about 250 pages. But that's me. While reading I was engaged in the story, I am not sure if I ever really came to care for any of the characters... no, didn't care to ...more

A short review of a long novel. I enjoyed reading this story, long and challenging, but it never lagged or grew boring. In summary, a small number of people have the ability to control others. They use this power for their own selfish ends, with a complete disregard for humanity. One old psych is caught up in their intrigues, and is partially responsible for killing several of these people.
