I really enjoyed this fun tale of magical mishaps and family secrets. The MC is a woman in her 40's who has found her foundation ripped away through divorce. She's broke, nearly homeless and desperate, then she gets a notice of an inheritance from someone she doesn't even know. It's a huge gothic house, a house that has more needs than she's ready for. Oh but this house is worth so much more wait till you see what the basement has to offer. :X

Not quite as good as a Charley Davidson book, but I did enjoy it. I liked that the main character is in her 40s.

I finally had a headache free day to read this book and I could not put it down. I was engrossed in Defiance’s discovery of herself and her powers. The connection between Defiance and Roane was compelling. I absolutely love reading about middle aged women discovering the best of themselves. I cannot wait for book two to be released.

3.5 stars = I liked it. I though it was pretty good - the lead isn't as kooky as Charlie(I do not miss her habit of naming inanimate objects and body parts), but still a bit quirky. There were several unique things about the rest of the cast that I really liked too. I'd read more even if they don't end up being KU. ...more

I found this first book in this series hilarious. It was such a fun read and I found it hard to put down! Defiance is down on her luck to say the least, thanks to her ex-husband and ex-mother-in-law, both of whom need taking down a peg or two (here's hoping that happens at some point in this series).

When she inherits a house from some unknown woman in Salem, she accepts it for no other reason that she's going to pretty much be homeless soon, so why not?! What else can go wrong with her life? Ho ...more

Darynda never disappoints. This is a great story. Witty, fun and fast paced. Defiance is a hoot. So looking forward to the next installment. Preordered the next two books.
