This was the prototype for all those television drams when an innocent man is hounded and pursued and events conspire to prevent him proving his innocence. I wonder whether Victor Hugo read this before writing Les Miserables? Godwin was using the story of a young innocent unfairly accused of theft, to explore the inequalities of the justice system.
