This was a fun departure from the usual Poe story. This is considered to be one of the forerunners to modern detective novels. Being a huge fan of Sherlock, I really liked this. It may not be as involved as other detective stories, but it was enjoyable anyway. It's not your typical Poe, which may put some people off. 11/1,001

Up until now I have only read Poe that I would call horror, or the macabre, so it was a nice surprise to realize that he also wrote detective stories. And then I learned that he is credited with creating the modern detective novel! Where was I for the past 59 years???
The Purloined Letter is the third book in the C August Dupin series and I have not read the others so may go back to do that. This story involves a letter stolen from the Queen of France!

Not one of Poe's better works, it is wordy while not descriptive and the narrator is very pretentious. Of course, perhaps this sort of solution is now so commonplace as to not be clever at all—when he wrote it, this might have seemed amazing.
