Over 1,000 pages long, Bleak House has had a negative impact on my annual GR reading goal. While not a perfect book, it will be added to my favorites list. I lost count while reading, but there are at least 40 characters (major and minor) in the book. Richard Carstone is one of the standout characters for me, capturing a type I've met but never seen captured so well in fiction.

Charles Dickens 9th novel, written as a serial was a bit slow on the upstart but over all an enjoyable book once into a bit. A lot of characters that slowly come to light and how they are interconnected. This is the story of Chancery (or equity law courts) which is part of the legal system. The court system is eating away at the inheritance of those who were to benefit. There are a lot of characters and a lot of subplots. This is supposedly the author's best book though I still hold A Tale of Tw

Bleak House is much lauded as Dickens’ most innovative novel. There are at least 57 characters moving about the stage set of the Chancery lawsuit of Jarndyce and Jarndyce. The novel is an overt attack on the British judiciary sy ...more

I thought this book was simply fantastic. The characters were so richly developed and the story, which changed voices many times, always had a new twist around the corner. At about a million pages, I was never bored. The book has everything- love, mystery, court drama, grief, despair, great happiness, and compassion. Esther is now one of my favorite heroines because no matter what happens she is driven by the purpose to lend a helping hand to one suffering, and to be a positive presence during t

It took me a long time to read Bleak House, and it took me several tries to read beyond the fourth chapter. It is a great book, with lots of twists and turns, and wonderful cast of characters. I read once that Bleak House is the best of Dickens, and although I loved Great Expectations, I can see why Bleak House is considered his best.
