My first of the five Zolas on the "1001 Books you Must Read Before you Die" List. Zola sought to write realistic (or "naturalistic") story and did a lot of reasearch talking with coal miners and visiting the facilities.
It's rather long and some parts seem to ramble on - I was thinking 3.5 stars towards the end, but the exciting last part pulled me up to a solid 4 stars. I plan to read more of Zola's novels, probably "The Dram Shop/ L'Assommoir" for the next one. ...more

I found this book to be very engaging. It is one in a extensive series by Emile Zola. The 13th. In this book, set in coal mining village in North France. This book shows the class struggle between the owners of the minds, the management of the mines and the workers and the beginnings fo organization of the worker. I was surprised by the sexual content of this book. Poor people only having sex to engage in when not working. The promiscuity of the girls and boys at ages too young to even be sexual

Before reading this book I was 99.99% sure that I wouldn't want to be a coal miner in the 19th century. This book made me 100% sure. :)
The book is set in Northern France in the 1860's and the central characters are coal miners. We clearly see how wretched the conditions they live and work in are. The workers are basically slaves. They get paid by the mine but then have to pay the mine back for their food and other goods.
