I loved this book in exactly the same way I loved Lolita . . .in a beautiful and poetic way, Morrison tells the story of Pecola, a very poor black 11 year old girl whose greatest wish is to have blue eyes. Pecola is an incest victim, pregnant with her father's child, and sees herself as ugly. Morrison is capable of making the reader empathize with characters that are just so far away from our own experience, and even relate, on some level, to characters who are committing terrible acts. This is my third book by Toni Morrison and her debut novel. In this book the author tries to give voice to what it is like to be rejected as a person by others. To want what your are not and to not embrace who you are. The story is told in Claudia's voice and an omniscient narrator and is the story of Pecola. Pecola prays for blue eyes. The language and imagery in this book are wonderful. The characters are heartbreaking. Morrison's style of writing is beautiful and at the same time awkward. Transitions within the story sometimes felt rather abrupt and unexpected. I fear I am just not sophisticated enough to "get it". Putting my limitations aside this is a beautiful book. ...more

I do not really have words to describe how good this book is. I was planning to read it slowly alongside some other "lighter" books, and simply devoured it in two days, quickly abandoning the other books in favor of this one. Morrison is definitely one of the best writers around. This is a bit more direct and heavy-handed than Beloved, at moments you feel like Morrison herself sneaks in to add some social commentary.
