I've finished Η μητέρα του σκύλου [The Daughter] by Pavlos Matesis of Greece (1990). Somewhat of an obscure list book, with only about 1000 ratings by readers.
The main character is a woman in her sixties who tells about her life when she was young in WW2 and shortly after, and also some about her later life. She seems to be an unreliable narrator, for example sometimes claiming to have become successful actress (mostly on tours to small cities) and other times admitting she never had a big part. ...more

The story of the occupation of Greece by German's and Italians during the Second World War. The lives of women and their children is difficult. They are starving and there are abuses toward the residents by the occupying troops. Rarau, the daughter tells the story of her mother who takes an Italian lover. This is also Rarau's story.

I was more than halfway through this book when I began to suspect that I may have read it before. Sure enough, when I checked, there was a short review from 2014. This is what I wrote then: I loved the humorous and sympathetic viewpoint of the child, both naive and worldly wise simultaneously. The criticism of the church and of politics was more obliquely portrayed, but was effectively revealed in the character of Doc Manolarus. Thought-provoking.
