James Stephens, an Irish poet and novelist was reared in the slums of Dublin. Once again this is a book that I would never had read if I wasn't trying to read as many of the 1001 Books You Should Read Before You Die and I'm so glad that I did. I really enjoy this relatively quick read about a young girl growing up in poverty and how she begins becoming independant. I also really liked the mother's character in this book, along with the neighbor lady and her brood!. Great read.
