A story set in South Africa in the sixties and seventies and tells the story of Rosa Burger, daughter of Lionel Burger. Rosa’s parents were Afrikaner Marxists and political activists who opposed apartheid. Rosa loses both her parents to the political struggle. Her dad died in prison. Is it more boring to be at a party where people are annoyingly discussing Marx and Engels for hours or to read about a party where that is all that happens for pages upon pages? You can think about that while you read this book! But the final quarter of the book makes you believe that Gordimer knew what she was doing all along.
