This was my first read of an Iris Murdoch novel, and won't be my last as there are several on the 1001 books list. The prose is quite beautiful. The book is so rich in description. I could really see the landscapes of this book. But I didn't really enjoy the story or characters. I found the plot to be unbelievable and stretched to the point of unbelievability, and the characters were unlikable and pretentious. ...more

I may be finally souring on Iris Murdoch. This book was pretty soap operaish; concerned a sixty something theatre actor and director who is done working. He moves to the sea to be alone and write a book about Clement; what he does is write a book about all the stuff that happens to him while he is thinking about writing about Clement. We never hear very specific info on Clement herself. There are some pretty magical moments amidst the high relationship drama. And isn't sixty something too old to ...more

I have to admit, I really struggled to enjoy this book. I did not like the characters, or even the story that much; however, the writing did redeem the book somewhat. There were times I couldn't put the book down because the writing. ...more

Booker Prize winning novel by Iris Murdoch. It is a good one. The Sea, the Sea, why the title. Accordingly it is from the cry of the Greeks in the Persian war when they sighted sea water. This is also referenced by Jules Verne in Journey to the Center of the Earth. The sea does play a significant roll in this large book.
