in 2015 I read the book Barren Lives by Graciliano Ramos, which takes place in Northeastern Brazil, or the Backlands, where it's inhabitants often struggle to survive during drought and poverty. They are often taken advantage of because many are illiterate. Lispector's main character, Macabea is from the Backlands, and ends up in the slums of Rio.

A simple story that's not easy to absorb because of its philosophical issues and questions. Not my usual sort of book, but that probably made it a good one for me to read. Thankfully, it's short- might not have been able to stick with it if it were 300 or more pages.

What am I missing? People that I trust loved this book, but I just found it dull and boring, too philosophical and wordy despite it being only 96 pages. I listened to the audio version and wonder if that is the reason I didn't connect.
