I found it engaging when Broch is actually narrating a plot with characters and setting and dialogue. And I enjoyed finding the connections between the various stories. In some chapters, he creates such a sense of dread, it feels like it could turn to horror any moment. This seems appropriate since post-WWI Germany did eventually become a horror story.
