I have to say that this book was more interesting to me for its place in history than for the actual story. That’s probably because I already knew the outlines of the story from the excellent movie and a barely remembered reading of a bad abridgement more than 40 years ago. On the 22nd of March 2017 I finished reading for the first time my first Steinbeck novel. On the 18th of April 2017 I finished my fifth (The Grapes of Wrath) Steinbeck novel. Each book I have loved a little more than the last, and with each one I read I love Steinbeck a little more. Truly, I am a bit obsessed. I read this book in high school and absolutely hated it with a passion. Which is strange, because I also read Of Mice and Men and East of Eden in high school, and they were two of my favorite books. I might give this another attempt some day to see if my maturity level improves my experience of it. What I remember in high school was that I thought it was overly wordy, boring, and pedantic. There was an entire chapter about a turtle! Why?!
