I probably would have been crying today even if I hadn't finished this book at lunch, but it sure didn't help. A moving end to a totally weird book. In the colonies, things only stay what they are with repeated naming, called marking, and failure to name things enough--or calling them by the wrong name--can have disastrous consequences. It is strange to read a book like this in translation, because one has to wonder whether linguistic oddities--like calling shampoo "hair soap"--are intentional.
