The first time I tried Wuthering Heights, I was initially challenged by its labyrinthine opening chapters. What is going on?? Getting through the first 4-5 chapters to when Ellen Dean begins her story, that’s where the novel opens up its powerful and ingenious narrative structure. This unique interplay of non-linear time and space captivated me, drawing me deeper into the bleak, windswept moors of Yorkshire and the tormented lives of its inhabitants.

Long considered to the classic example of a gothic novel, Wuthering Heights is indeed a classic and worthy of being read. It is a strong example of the gothic genre and the time-period in which it was written. While I can't say I loved it, I also can't claim to have hated or even dislike it. In fact I also didn't find Catherine or Heathcliff to be worthy of my hate, though many a reader seems to. Instead I felt pity for the both of them, and in fact all of the characters that populate this book.

Nasty people behaving badly. A friend on Shelfari suggested I think of it as a Frankenstein novel as opposed to a romance, which helps, but doesn't make me want to ever read it again.

6 times through now, at different times of my life, and this is the final time. I just can't like it. While the moors are beautiful, the inhabitants aren't, not even through the prism of wildness. They are like a blight upon the natural beauty described. I am happy to, quite literally, close the book on this tale.

Great writing but hard to like or care about any of the characters. A very hateful, revenge filled love story.
