I picked this up on audiobook after reading Zach's review, and I must say that I enjoyed it as much as I think I would have if I had found it when I was ten - which is to say, very much. It's on my imaginary list of "books that would be good to read aloud to my hypothetical offspring".

definitely not farmer's best. it's fantasy rather than sci-fi oriented, which takes away a lot of the juxtaposition between environment and character, which is what i love so much about 'house of the scorpion' and of course 'the ear the eye and the arm'. it's a cute book, but definitely far more a young adult / kids' book than her other works - the others challenge your worldview whether you're 11 (the age at which i first read EE&A) or 23 (the age i was when i read HOTS). this was a charming st

I just reread this because I got the sequel but felt that it had been too long since I'd read this one and was afraid that I wasn't going to remember it well enough.
The first time I read it was awhile ago and I was much younger. I was able to appreciate how much research and effort went into this book much more the second time around.
