What Members Thought

I found this book kind of annoying. The exposition was very obviously exposition-y (hey, person who has travelled a lot, tell me about the world in which I live! Hey, storyteller, tell us a story about the history of our world!), which dragged on the story a bit. I also found the plot to be a little too obvious, and the characters too generic (gee, I wonder if this exceptionally smart and beautiful female character will choose to stay with her abusive mother and marry her dumb and sexist boyfrie

Chances are good that I never would have read this book if not for seeing it mentioned and recommended by someone I know. As I've mentioned a few times, I'm not a big reader of fantasy (despite the fact that four of my last eleven books read were all fantasy), so it wouldn't have caught my attention without someone else's encouragement. I would hate for that to happen to someone else, so let me sum this up for you before I go into more detail: this is an extraordinary book.

Lives up to the hype
I keep hearing how good this book is. I’ll be honest— for the first section of the book, I didn’t see it. It was irritatingly lacking in transparency, but that could be because I didn’t learn the map. If every time a place is mentioned, you check where it is, your progress through the book would go smoother. This book was published in 2008... Luckily they released this new edition just this year!! The reason that I have not read it before now is I could never find it anywhere, but I can't believe that it's not talked about more! This is fantasy at its top tier! Where some books are focused on world building, some focus on character development and still others focus on plot, Mr Brett seemed to take time on all three. The world building and magic systems are all very believable a ...more
