Was this book meant to be cute or serious? I couldn't tell. It seemed very light and the characters weren't much developed, but it often seemed the author was trying to make it weighty and dark, what with the misfortunes and abuses the characters underwent (abusive or absent parents, death in the family, humiliations by friends) but their personalities and stories weren't fleshed out enough for me to care. I thought the plot was pretty good, good enough that I liked the book fairly well. However, the constant changing of viewpoints was distracting, and I though there were way too many characters that were supposed to change and grow, and that we had to care about. This could have been pulled off brilliantly, but it needed to be longer. Too much telling, not enough showing.
