The book Divergent should have been.
Wren, reboot 187, is an emotionless fighting machine (with the inability to die from most wounds and sickness) whose circumscribed world of "crime fighting" and life in the goverment prison where she works begins to unravel as the government advances their experimentation on the other "reboot" subjects. Oh and there's also a boy involved.

Despite what I hear at publishers pushes, the dystopian genre is beyond overcrowded and there's little new being said. Reboot is a case in point. Set in future Texas after some virus attacks the population, the lines between the rich (known as ricos) and poor are stark. And then there are the Reboots, people who have died and "rebooted" (aka came back to life). No, they're not zombies. They're just different: less emotional, stronger, less in need of food. Fantastic debut novel! Now THIS is an example of First Person (past tense) that WORKS.

* oppressive government? check.
* walled cities? check.
* re-animated dead? check.
* spunky heroine with hidden abilities? NO!!!!!!!!!

Wren 173 is anything but spunky, and she KNOWS just how good she is at kicking ass. What she doesn't seem to realize is how good she is at inspiring others. She's been just doing her thing, living her life (what life she has, which isn't much), not really looking around. Until now
