A really fantastic beginning to a very long series. Richard is a simple woodsman who just wants to live in peace, but when a woman in distress crashes into his life he's forced to use all his skills to survive. I loved the clash of cultures and assumptions that ensue between Richard and Kahlan, and I love the growing respect between them. Richard's crash-course in how the outer world works is a great read; it's informative without being an infodump, and tells as much about Richard's character as

I read this back when it first came out, mainly because I discovered that the Wizard's First Rule is: People are stupid. Despite the joke of the title, the book is quite a dark fantasy, with a bad guy who is truly horrifying. I didn't love it, though, because to me it seemed a bit too much like The Wheel of Time . . . the protagonist even has the same first initial as the protag from WOT. Richard is also so kind and honest and brave that he's, well, a bit boring.

High fantasy for a teenager
When I first read this book, I’d really liked it and tore through the series, before stuttering at the third-to-last book. Book 4+ got old too. But this book was one of my favorites. On a re-read now, a decade later, I can see the elements that once made it attractive but the book is no longer compelling, because the narrative voice is too heavy handed with telling rather than showing.
It also seemed to go on forever, since there is a lot of plot to get through, which i ...more

Wizard's First Rule has been one of my all-time favourite fantasy books ever since I first discovered it in the late 90s. I've probably read it about 6-8 times since then. While the later books in the series definitely have their weaknesses, this first one is fantasy when it's best (certainly beats LotR any day... but then I never was a Tolkien fan ;) ).

Interesting plot, interesting and sometimes funny main characters. I was really drawn in with the child Rachel. ...but there's so much detail given to the evil and torture parts it's rather off-putting.

This book is definitely one that people either love or hate. After reading the series and coming back to the first book, Goodkind's writing in this one does leave something to be desired. Even so, the story, subplots and characters prevented me from putting it down. I was drawn into their world and enjoyed every minute of it. Each book explores a wizard's rule which are usually truths about people that apply to the real world. Overall, these books are more accessible to non-fantasy readers than

I just couldn't read. So much apologizing and dialog that seems so plan out... and stupid words and phrases and I swear had I read one more "my friend" in that book I would have been force to burn the damn book before returning it to the library!

I've just started reading this book (June 2007) and right from the beginning it has been wonderful. I only hope that the remainder of this series is as good as this first one.
